One of Allan Bateman’s three tries in the uncapped game of 1999. The opposition are the USA Eagles.

Read a piece in one of the national papers just prior to the Lions tour in 2001, when players going on the tour were asked which past Lion they wished was touring with them that year. Of the handful asked a few answered Gareth Edwards, Barry John etc but Will Greenwood stated Allan Bateman who was still playing at the time and who Greenwood toured with in 1997 when I think he had yet to be capped by England.

What a great player Bateman was – one of the best centres I’ve ever seen with a tremendous work rate. Real class!

The USA Eagles beat Neath at the Gnoll in about 1987, when Neath were the top team in Britain. How did that happen? BTW Simon, was that try really from 1999? Thought it was longer ago.

Many of his former team mates consider him to be the best player they ever played with. And he played with lots of top players. Batman and Jiffy are the only two Welsh players to make it in Aussie Rugby League. And they were only 8 stone a piece. Legends.

He was class. Aeguably the best player ever to come out of Neath RFC
